Comprehensive Immigration Reform; Promoting Immigration
Updated: Dec 8, 2017
America is a land of immigrants. An America that turns its back on the aspirations inscribed on Lady Liberty is not American.
Comprehensive immigration reform is needed to address the ills of an immigration system in desperate need of overhaul. The immigration process is too uncertain, driven by ideology and expensive. Immigrants must again be viewed as the reason we are great as a nation, not as symbols of interlopers on the lands of natives.
Resolve DACA Permanently
Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) was a temporary fix to a problem of fundamental unfairness. The Trump administration's decision to rescind the program, seeking to force Congress to act, is tantamount to playing football with decency and basic human rights. Congress must move decisively to permanently resolve the status of Dreamers under DACA, offering a path to citizenship.
Improve availability of non-immigrant training visas
The increase in the availability of longer duration temporary training visas and work permits is essential to keep America's economy moving forward. Employers are facing an acute shortage of trained and skilled workers across a wide spectrum of industries, stunting growth and increasing costs of operations. Seasonal employers - especially in the critical travel and tourism industry - are especially adversely impacted. Congress must act decisively to protect this important industry.
